What to write in wedding thank you cards: wording and printing guide

Wedding thank you cards are a personal way to thank guests for celebrating with you, sending a gift or helping with your wedding. They can be printed with a favourite wedding photograph, a simple message or a design matching your invitations and other stationery.

Here is what to include, along with practical advice for designing and printing your cards.

What Should You Write in a Wedding Thank You Card?

Keep the message short and personal. Thank the guest for attending, mention their gift where appropriate and finish with a warm sign-off.  Example: Thank you for celebrating our wedding day with us and for your thoughtful gift. We are so grateful you could be there.  With love,  Sophie and James

You can print the same message inside every card and add a handwritten note for each guest.

Choosing a Photograph and Card Design

Choose a clear, high-resolution photograph that still looks sharp when enlarged to the finished card size. Portrait photographs often suit upright cards, while wider group photographs may work better in landscape format.  Keep the design simple and make sure any wording remains easy to read over the photograph. A plain area, subtle background or lightly shaded text box can improve readability.

You could include:

  • One main wedding photograph
  • Your names and wedding date
  • A short thank you message
  • A smaller photograph on the back
  • A design matching your invitations

Remember to leave enough blank space inside if you plan to add a handwritten message.

Silk or Uncoated Card?

  • 350gsm silk card has a smooth surface with a slight sheen. It is usually the best option for wedding photographs, detailed images and stronger colours.
  • 350gsm uncoated card has a natural paper texture and is easier to write on. It suits simple designs, illustrations and softer colours, although large areas of solid colour may appear less even than they would on silk card.

White 120gsm peel-and-seal envelopes can be added when ordering.

How to Prepare and Order Your Cards

A press-quality PDF is the preferred file format. For designs or photographs that reach the edge, include 3mm bleed and keep important text at least 4mm inside the finished edge.  Supply folded cards as individual pages in normal reading order:

  1. Front cover
  2. Inside left
  3. Inside right
  4. Back cover

Leave any unprinted pages blank within the PDF. There is no need to add a folding line, as the cards will be creased and folded during production.  Our Artwork Guide explains how to prepare files using Canva, Adobe and Microsoft Office.  After placing your order, upload the artwork and include any special instructions. We will check the file and email a PDF proof showing the layout before printing begins.  Use the proof to check the photograph, page order, spelling, fold position and finished size carefully.
